The Defence of Duffer's Drift
Description
“The Defence of Duffer’s Drift” is a tactical wargame set during the Boer War of over a hundred years ago. In 1908 Col. Swindon wrote up the scenario in a book of the same name that has been used to train officers in small unit tactics to this very day. This is the first time it has appeared as a commercial Encounters Matrix Game wargame product. .
Encounters Matrix Games are like nothing you’ve played before. Players start with forty coins which are used to buy the right to make things happen. There is no order of play. The first player to throw down a coin “takes the initiative”. They make up a action their men do and what results it causes. A player on the other side decides how likely that is to happen so players have to be extremely logical and convincing have their initiatives work. In the end they roll and the initiative happens or it doesn’t. .
The Defence of Duffer’s Drift allows players to practice imagining how to fight and how to judge the likelihood of success of certain actions. It is not a children’s game. Players need to be mature gentlemen. If your opponent beats you, accept it graciously. Learning to accept defeat is as important a lesson as learning how to win because real life hands us both and real losers are the ones who can’t handle small set backs. .
People interested in British Colonial wars, modern infantry actions, or military logic games will like this product. .
This is an Encounters Matrix Game. It comes in a box with a 20x15 inch hard board tactical map, a 10x15 inch hard board grand tactical map, order of battle, hardback book of Swindon's classic text and rule book, wooden counters and plastic gold coins, and dice. .
